What is a Mandala?

I first came across mandalas as a form of healing and grief therapy after my son passed in 2006 and became intrigued with their beautiful repeated patterns, the variety of designs and the state of mindfulness I was able to reach while creating them.

In case you are not aware, a mandala is a circular design (the word, Mandala, is ancient Sanskrit for ‘circle’) with a centre point and repeated patterns and symbols radiating from the centre. It is said that the purpose of creating a mandala is to help transform ordinary minds into enlightened ones and to assist with healing.

You may have heard of, or even seen, Tibetan monks spending up to 40 hours creating the most beautiful and intricate sand mandalas only to sweep them away in a ritual destruction of their art work…or is it really destruction? To the monks it is a symbol of unattachment of letting go and of not feeling the need to hang onto what is truly transient.

Mindful Mandalas

Rooted in spirituality, the drawing of a mandala, with its symmetry, form, colours and symbols becomes a bridge between the known and the unknown, the conscious and the unconscious. It links the left brain (mathematical, patterns and uniformity) with the right brain (colour, visual appeal, beauty and mysticism), aligning thinking with intuition creating a sense of harmony, balance and flow. This is the state where time and space become one and mindfulness is achieved silencing the ‘chatterbox’ in our heads as we create our own Mindful Mandalas.

Using templates provided, you will enjoy creating your own mindful mandalas. Each lesson we will focus on a different concept using mandalas as a springboard for understanding more about ourselves, learning to let go and surrender to the moment, find peace in mindfulness and discover the joys of creating without judgement.

Each Mindful Mandalas Series runs over four weeks plus a bonus class in the fifth week where you will create our own powerful Labyrinth.

The four classes are:

  1. Introduction to Mindful Mandalas (Release, Mindfulness & Letting Go)
  2. Freeform Mandalas (Flow)
  3. Found Objects Mandalas (Curiosity & Playfulness; Impermanence)
  4. Word Mandala (I AM – Discovering Your Values)
  5. BONUS : The Path of the Labyrinth (Clarity & Self-trust)

You will receive  a template for that day’s activity and during each 2 hour class you will be taken through a guided meditation, practise some gentle Qi Gong exercises and then taken step by step through the class’ activity

After the class, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and share any aha moments you had.

You will also be invited to join the Wise HeART Studio Champions Facebook group to share your mandalas and experiences, connect with other attendees and learn more about mindfulness and intuitive art as well as lots more tips on how to develop your creativity.

You will have a choice of attending a class in the studio during the day or via Zoom for evening classes. In studio classes will have all materials provided and for Zoom classes, you will be able to use what materials you have at home. You will also be sent a Zoom link prior to each class.

Class times are listed under the Workshops tab on this website.

What Clients Say

I was so impressed. I didn’t even really know too much about mandalas but Maureen skillfully guided us through a series of classes that opened my mind and at the same time focused my mind to be present in the moment!

This course has put my fears of “not being creative enough” to design my own mandala at ease. It had so much more than learning how to create a mandala too. I really enjoyed being totally present and time not even being a factor as I loved the creative process and the peace and calm, I gained. Special bonus though was doing labyrinths and the word mandala.
