What is a Mandala?
You may have heard of, or even seen, Tibetan monks spending up to 40 hours creating the most beautiful and intricate sand mandalas only to sweep them away in a ritual destruction of their art work…or is it really destruction? To the monks it is a symbol of unattachment of letting go and of not feeling the need to hang onto what is truly transient.
The literal meaning of the word, Mandala is ‘circle’. Ancient Hindu scriptures depict mandalas as a period of creativity, of powerful existence, and a symbol of deeper connection with the self and the universe at large. The earliest evidence of Buddhist mandala art dates to the first century B.C.E. but appeared in other regions, such as Tibet, China, and Japan by the fourth century. Although rooted in Buddhism, mandalas later became present in Hinduism, New Age Spirituality, and other religious practices.
The mandala is a circular design with a centre point and repeated patterns and symbols emanating from this central point. This repetition assists the mandala creator to enter a meditative state where the concerns of the world disappear and total focus and mindfulness take over. It is said that the purpose of creating a mandala is to help transform ordinary minds into enlightened ones and to assist with healing.
‘The center is a dot, which is a symbol considered free of dimensions. It is interpreted as the starting point, the beginning of contemplation, and devotion to the divine. From there, the dot is surrounded by lines and geometrical patterns that symbolize the universe, encompassed by the outer circle which represents the cyclical nature of life.’
The practise of creating mandalas has taken on a new meaning in the western world in more modern times. Still rooted in the realms of spirituality, the drawing of a mandala, with its symmetry, form, colours and symbols becomes a bridge between the known and the unknown, the conscious and the unconscious, the spiritual with the tangible. It links the left brain (mathematical, patterns and uniformity) with the right brain (colour, visual appeal, beauty and mysticism), aligning thinking with intuition creating a sense of harmony, balance and flow. This is the state where time and space become one and mindfulness is achieved silencing the ‘chatterbox’ in our heads as we create our own Mindful Mandalas.
In this online series on Zoom, using templates provided, you will create your own mandalas using fine liners, crayons or whatever drawing materials you have on hand. Each lesson we will focus on a different concept using mandalas as a springboard for understanding more about ourselves, learning to let go and surrender to the moment, find peace in mindfulness and discover the joys of creating without judgement.
The series runs over six weeks, with each week a two hour workshop. The final week includes a bonus session where we create our own powerful labyrinth to help in decision making and gaining clarity over a challenge we might be experiencing.
The four classes are:
- Introduction to Mindful Mandalas (Release & Letting Go)
- Freeform Mandalas (Flow)
- Zendalas (Mindfulness)
- Found Objects Mandalas (Curiosity & Playfulness; Impermanence)
- Word Mandala (I AM – Discovering Your Values)
- BONUS : The Path of the Labyrinth (Clarity & Self-trust)
Before each class you will receive a template for that day’s activity; during each 2 hour class you will be taken through a guided meditation, practise some gentle Qi Gong exercises and then taken step by step through the class’ activity
After the class, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and share any aha moments you had.
You will also be invited to join the Wise HeART Studio Champions Facebook group to share your mandalas and experiences, connect with other attendees and learn more about mindfulness and intuitive art as well as lots more tips on how to develop your creativity.

What Clients Say
I was so impressed. I didn’t even really know too much about mandalas but Maureen skillfully guided us through a series of classes that opened my mind and at the same time focused my mind to be present in the moment!
This course has put my fears of “not being creative enough” to design my own mandala at ease. It had so much more than learning how to create a mandala too. I really enjoyed being totally present and time not even being a factor as I loved the creative process and the peace and calm, I gained. Special bonus though was doing labyrinths and the word mandala.
